It's that time of year! Update your copyright and review your website policies for 2025.

The new year is here, and while most people are making resolutions or setting goals, let me ask you this: Is your website ready to step into the new year with you?

If you’re scratching your head, let me explain. There are two small but important updates that often get overlooked and can make a big difference:

  1. Updating Your Copyright Line

  2. Reviewing and Updating Your Website Policies

Let’s break it down (because no one needs extra confusion at the start of the year).

1. Why Update Your Copyright Line?

That tiny little “© 2024” at the bottom of your website isn’t just a decoration. It serves a purpose!

  • It shows visitors that your website is current and active, not abandoned in the digital cobwebs of years past.

  • It protects your content. While your work is protected the moment you create it, an updated copyright line reinforces your legal ownership.

  • It’s a simple way to build trust. A current copyright date signals professionalism and attention to detail.

How to Update It:

Most website platforms (like Squarespace, WordPress, or Wix) allow you to edit your footer.

Update the range of years you’d like your copyright to extend to [Ex. © 2018-2025]. If this feels like a headache, your web developer can help!

Quick Tip: A year range ensures that the copyright explicitly covers all content from the first year of creation to the present, protecting earlier materials as well as new ones under the same notice.

2. The Importance of Website Policies

Let’s talk about those often-overlooked policies—the Privacy Policy, Terms of Service, and Disclaimer. You know, the ones most people scroll past without reading (guilty, right?).

Here’s why they matter:

  • Privacy laws are evolving. With changes like GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act), your policies need to reflect how you collect, store, and use client data (and yes, it still applies to you even if your business is not based out of California).

  • They protect your business. Clear Terms of Service and Disclaimers outline what you are and aren’t responsible for, helping you avoid potential legal issues.

  • Clients expect transparency. A well-written Privacy Policy shows your audience that you care about protecting their information.

Quick Tip: If it’s been more than a year since you reviewed your policies, it’s time. Regulations change, and your business might have evolved too. Make sure they are the most up-to-date as possible!

How to Update Your Website Policies

  1. Review Current Policies: Look for outdated information, like old contact details or services you no longer offer.

  2. Check for Compliance Updates: Research any new regulations that may apply to your business or region.

  3. Consult an Expert: If you’re unsure, working with a lawyer who specializes in online businesses is a worthwhile investment.

Did you know that failing to include a privacy policy on your website could result in significant fines? For example:

  • Under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), businesses serving California residents can face fines of up to $2,500 per violation or $7,500 per intentional violation.

  • If your website collects data from children under 13 without a privacy policy, you could be fined up to $43,280 per violation under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

Ensuring your website complies with these laws is essential to protecting your business and building trust with your audience. Don’t let something as simple as a privacy policy put your business at risk.

Quick Tip: We’ve worked with attorney, Christy Westerfield, for years and highly recommend her website policy templates, available here.

A fresh start isn’t just for personal goals; it’s for your business too. Updating your copyright line and website policies is a small step that makes a big impact.
