My Personal Experience Finding a Therapist (And What It Taught Me About Client Attraction)

I wanted to share a personal story that perfectly illustrates why clarity in your marketing messaging matters so much.
Recently, I entered the postpartum period and decided to get ahead of potential anxiety by finding a therapist who specializes in helping mothers during this vulnerable time.
As both a therapist myself and a digital marketer for helping professionals, I'm usually focused on helping others attract clients - but suddenly I was on the other side!
Here's what my search process looked like:
I searched Psychology Today (the online directory) using specific terms: Oscar Health, female, pregnancy, prenatal, postpartum
I found 20 therapists - 18 accepting new clients, 2 with waitlists
I read through their profiles, and here's what I discovered:
Therapist #1: "Want to learn coping skills and build confidence so that you feel empowered to set and attain goals? If so, I am the therapist for you! Passionate about my work, I believe in the transformative power of therapy to heal, empower, and bring about positive change. I approach each client with a client-centered, strengths-based perspective, tailoring my therapeutic approach to meet individual needs."
Therapist #2: "Hello! My name is Amanda. I am committed to helping women from conception to motherhood address their mental health needs. Together we will explore what you need to restore yourself. With therapy, you can enjoy your time with your family and your partner to feel more present in your life. A significant part of my practice focuses on helping women and their partners with issues related to reproductive mental health including infertility, miscarriage and infant loss, pregnancy and postpartum concerns. I am currently licensed in Texas, Florida, and Ohio."
Therapist #3: "In therapy sessions I consider myself a directional helper working with you to cultivate change in your life. Together we identify what you want different, analyze unhelpful thoughts and behavior patterns to live a more meaningful, value-centered life."
Therapist #4: "My passion is helping women and birthing folks move from surviving to thriving. I specialize in perinatal mental health and women's mental health including neurodivergence, hormonal concerns, matrescence, trauma, and sexuality. I'm also a certified EMDR therapist and help folks work through attachment and betrayal trauma."
So, who do you think I reached out to?
What made them stand out?
They spoke directly to my specific situation, using words like "women," "motherhood," "perinatal," and "postpartum."
These therapists made me feel seen and safe, like they'd actually be able to help me based on how they described their services.
The takeaway? This is exactly what makes potential clients want to work with you too. Specific, targeted messaging that addresses their exact needs and concerns will always outperform generic professional descriptions.
